Perhaps it’s the almost dystopian thought of getting dressed up and leaving the house or just people reaffirming their love for fashion, but regardless, the trends defining style in 2021 have taken over our social feeds and are redefining how we dress in ‘the new COVID normal’. Here three of the top athleisure trends for 2021:
Teddy Fleece:
According to Vogue, ‘Supple lines and soft fabrics define the ultimate trend of 2021. One word: Comfort’. And if we’re taking one thing from our time in lockdown it’s dressing for ease – with everything from matching loungewear co-ords to knitted onesies, and now we can add cuddly teddy fleece fabric to the list.
Classics never die, and the hero style teddy bear coat is so versatile and easy to wear that it’s a smart investment for every athleisure look. In recent seasons, everyone from Off-White to Hermès have been doing all they can to affirm the trend’s rightful place in high fashion, proving that teddy fleece may be reaching its crescendo.
Style celeb icons such as Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber have also both been photographed in recent months wearing green North Face fleece which is part of MM6 Maison Margiela’s collaboration with The North Face. When facing chilly temperatures (especially during the current New York winter), a soft teddy bear texture is hard to resist, especially when it comes to those of us aiming for an ultimate winter staple that can transcend the trends of time.
90s sportswear:
According to our favourite high-fashion brands, the 90’s are back. S/S21 is all about designers adding urban elements to 90’s athleisure wear collections for the ultimate nostalgic vibe. Brands such as Gucci, Prada and Miu Miu have just released collections which combine ready-to-wear sports tracksuits with luxe detailing to bring an active touch to daily fashion trends.
90’s athleisure has been back for a while, but the continuation of the trend into S/S21 proves it’s back and bolder than ever. These nostalgic pieces take us back to a golden era – where fits were cool and relaxed – another true indication that comfort is the biggest priority in fashion this year.
At Gucci S/S21 we saw colourful football-inspired jerseys featuring stripes and bold lettering for a retro feel, and at Celine we saw dad hats, bright athleisure jackets and statement high-top sneakers – reminiscent of 90s streetwear.
Distinctive and bright colour-blocked hues and monochrome sportswear tracksuits dominated in true Versace fashion for a 90’s hip-hop feel, and at Prada we saw 90’s sportswear elevated through an oversized hoodie and sporty belts.
Celebs such as Gigi Hadid and Suki Waterhouse are well-known to get around in 90’s Adidas slides, Hailey Bieber and Bella Hadid are well-known to rock a pair of bike shorts with an oversized sweater and Kendall Jenner and a whole host of other fashion bloggers aren’t shy to wearing a Gucci belt bag – reminiscent of the 90’s.
Second skin knits:
While we became well accustomed to wearing loungewear and leggings during lockdown, it’s time to say goodbye to loungewear and hello to second-skin knitwear which hugs the body. From Rick Owens to Maison Margiela, this season’s athleisure offerings are soft and delicate – with everything from spandex bodysuits to sheer mesh separates.
Clingy knits have been present in new season collections from Rick Owens, Sportmax and Thebe Magugu – ultra-fine, stretchy knits in soft spring colours, while meshed pieces such as Kim Shui’s printed pants and Surpriya Lele’s sheer square-necked dress have also been shown.
One of our favourite athleisure knitted trends though, is the full catsuit in a stretchy fabric – most popular of which was Marine Serre’s iconic moon print worn by the likes of Beyonce and Kylie Jenner. Perfect for everything from a workout/brunch to a night out dancing, this season’s favourites are from Prada and Chanel and are lighter, stretchier and offered in bright spring colours.
The biggest colour trends for S/S 2021
Despite the runways being virtual this year and the S/S21 season certainly feeling different given the current COVID climate, the colours injected throughout the lines for S/S21 were nothing short of boring. Here are the colours we think are going to make a serious statement in 2021:
Mellow yellow:
Whether you go for a pop of yellow in your accessories or shoes or go all out yellow to make a statement, this hue is sure to spice up any ‘fit.
Bubble gum pink:
One of the most prominent colours sprinkled through S/S21 collections was this statement pink which is in-between a neon and pastel shade.
Magenta magic:
One of our favourites for 2021 – this turnt’ up colour which is a purplish-red is sure to elevate any athleisure wardrobe.
Tangerine:
This colour isn’t new to athleisure by any means but has shown up again in the 2021 fashion trend palette. Whether you wear it as a second skin knit or as an outerwear layer this is a go-to for the new season.
Tennis ball green:
A mix between neon and yellow green (the exact colour of a tennis ball), this striking shade made the rounds at Balmain and David Koma this season and is a hot colour for spring.
